What is genealogy?

Genealogy is the study of your family history. Data Source Consulting has 15 years' experience of working with original UK records.

Did you know?

Ever since the 1500s your ancestors have figured in documents and registers created by governments, towns, parishes and organisations.

If you know where to look, it is often possible to find contemporary accounts of your ancestors' lives. Much can also be deduced from official registers such as  births, marriages and deaths.

In the UK we are fortunate because many of these documents have been indexed. This makes it simpler for most people to track their family back to the 1800s - within a few days.

The challenge is going beyond the indexes to check the details and experience the fascinating details of an original document.

Indexed Records

  • Civil Registration of births, marriages and deaths - 1837 to date
  • Censuses - 1841 to 1911 (every ten years)
  • Parish Registers of baptisms, marriages and burials - 1538 to date
  • Wills - to date
  • Cemeteries - burials, cremations and monumental inscriptions

Other Records

  • Schools - attendance records, log books
  • Manuscripts - letters, diaries
  • Books
  • Periodicals - newspapers, magazines, journals
